In September of 1995, in the ALFA building located on Carter Hill Road, Taylor Road Academy came to life.  Based on the principles of quality education and total development of the student, TRA quickly established itself as a leader of education in the Montgomery community.

In its first year, Taylor Road Academy gained full membership into the Alabama Independent School Association and competed in the AISA State Computer Competition. One student placed second and the school tied for third place in one of the contest's divisions. The school also started several extracurricular activities, such as its own yearbook program

The Taylor Road Academy grew out of Step Ahead Educational Center, a home-schooling and tutorial service started by Janine Brouillette in 1994.  Since the campus moved across from Auburn University of Montgomery, the student population of TRA has continued to grow.
